Death Claims Filing Guide

Learn how to properly file death claims with step-by-step instructions

Death Claims

A Death Claim is the most fundamental insurance claim. It is a request for the payment of the sum assured (the policy's face value) and any accrued bonuses to the beneficiaries of a life insurance policy upon the death of the insured person.

How it works: The beneficiaries (nominees) named in the policy must notify the insurance company of the policyholder's death and submit required documents, such as a death certificate, the original policy document, and a completed claim form.

Purpose: To provide financial security and support to the deceased's family or dependents, helping them cover living expenses, debts, funeral costs, and future needs.

Key Point: Most policies have a contestability period (usually 1-2 years). If death occurs due to suicide or misrepresentation of facts within this period, the claim may be denied or only premiums refunded.

How to File a Death Claim

  • Notification – Inform the insurance company as soon as possible following the death of the insured. Most policies require notification within a specific timeframe.

  • Documentation – Submit the required documents:
    - Original policy document
    - Certified copy of death certificate
    - Completed claim form
    - Identification of claimant and deceased
    - Any additional forms required by the insurer

  • Verification – The insurer verifies the documents and may investigate if the death occurred during the contestability period (typically first 2 years of the policy).

  • Settlement – Once approved, the death benefit is paid to the named beneficiaries either as a lump sum or structured settlement.

Important Note

Most policies have a contestability period (usually 1-2 years) where the insurer may investigate claims more thoroughly and could deny claims based on misrepresentation.
